There's Always Next Year

"There's Always Next Year" depicts a herd of elk running and leaping through their habitat which consists of underbrush, new growth evergreens and fallen timber. The entire base of the sculpture is an unusual, Manitoba shed antler that sits perfectly balanced on four tines. An old growth stump makes up the focal point of the piece with a message about the continuing beauty of the life-death-life cycle of nature and the part in which we humans have to play. If you look carefully you can see the source of the animal's alarm, an arrow that has missed its intended mark, a majestic six point bull elk. He has escaped this year, but he will likely be back even more elusive and magnificent next year. Like the forest, the animals live, reproduce and die in sync with nature's ongoing cycle. Undeniably, the human species is not only connected to, but very much a part of the natural world. Our influence and cooperation with conservation groups supports ongoing programs to maintain balance with habitat and species at risk. Funding for habitat creation and reclamation as well as reintroduction of threatened species are some of the main objectives of groups like SCI, RMEF, FNAWS, MDF etc. Much of the funding for these projects comes from individuals who donate and support these programs. Hunters, fishermen, collectors and wildlife enthusiasts generate hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in North America and abroad. With the ongoing help of these organizations, we can insure the future of habitat and wildlife so that there is always a next year for our children to enjoy the abundance of the natural world.
