The Old Rugged Cross
This piece was created in memorial
to my Father, Stan Wilson and was inspired by a poem that he
wrote.
A Man on His Horse on Top of a Ridge - by Stan Wilson.
A man on his horse on top of a
ridge,
As daylight begins to appear,
The sights and the sounds of
the world all around
Are natures gift to his ears.
Yet the stars in the sky and
the mountains so high
Tell a story about all creation
A man on his horse on top of a
ridge
Are a small speck of dust in
relation.
As he looks down below,
The lights start to glow
As people prepare for their day
In their buildings so grand,
their steeples so tall
Where they sing and worship and
pray.
To the man on his horse on top
of the ridge
He hears the sound of their
call.
But the man sits his horse on
top of the ridge
In the greatest church of them
all.
The poem says so much about the
spirituality of the people who live in close contact with the land. As
the horse and rider are carefully picking their way down a rocky trail,
they are passing beneath an old lightning struck pine. They may not
have noticed the cracked tree and the Old Rugged Cross deep in the bark
but they have certainly felt the presence of the Creator in the land
through which they are passing.
When our Dad passed away, we had
his favorite hymn played at his service, The Old Rugged Cross.
